When you need some refreshment sitting out in the beaming sun, or need to be reminded of warmth on a miserable day, Aperol spritz has come to the rescue! For those of us that aren’t into the incredibly alcohol-forward drinks made with strong liquor, this aperitif cocktail is perfect. Wince-free guarantee!

Has Italy ever done us wrong? From comfort foods like lasagna and chicken parm, to refreshing favorites like bruschetta and this Aperol spritz. I swear every Italian edible creation I’ve tried has been an absolute winner. The drinks are no exception!

What is an Aperol spritz?

This Italian creation, reminiscent of an Italian soda, is an aperitif-style cocktail. While this drink has been popular in Northern Italy for decades, it has just recently exploded in popularity around the world. In fact, it was ranked within the top 10 most popular cocktails worldwide in 2019. It’s refreshing, it’s bubbly, it’s citrusy. Are you craving a spritz yet?

Ingredients

ingredients needed to make an aperol spritz
  • Prosecco – Can’t find any? Don’t like Prosecco? Use Champagne or Cremant de Loire instead for a dry taste, or Moscato d-Asti if you want a sweeter flavor.
  • Aperol – The namesake of the recipe! If, for whatever reason, you can’t find any, Campari can work in its place. Don’t worry! I won’t tell anyone.
  • Soda – Soda water or sparkling water. Feel free to use flavored sparkling water, ideally citrus, for some extra flavor.
  • Orange – Freshly sliced for garnish. I used a blood orange for its beautiful color.

How to make an Aperol spritz

This recipe is too easy! It’s such a nice way to treat yourself with fresh, summery flavors any time of the year. Here’s all the hard work required:

  1. Fill a wine glass with ice. Add the Prosecco, Aperol, and soda. Stir gently and garnish with a fresh orange wheel.

There you have it! Now, what’s stopping you from enjoying this refreshing cocktail?

How to properly store leftover Prosecco

Once you pop that bottle, the cork definitely won’t fit back in the bottle. If you’re only making a few spritzes, what on earth should you do with the rest of the bottle? These tricks will help it last a few extra days for you:

The spoon trick: This may sound odd, but stay with me here. Refrigerate a metal spoon, preferably with a long handle, and place it in the neck of the bottle. Simply store the Prosecco in the fridge and it should keep for 2 days. This method is divisive with some swearing by it, and others calling it an old wives’ tale.

Bottle stopper: You can also buy a stopper for your bottle. This method is used widely in restaurants. This method will be most effective for you. The bubbles should keep for 3-4 days.

A homemade Aperol Spritz is right around the corner for you! Made with just three ingredients, throw this refreshing cocktail together whenever you're craving something fresh and bubbly to sip.
Prevent your screen from going dark

Ingredients

  • 3 ounce Prosecco
  • 2 ounce Aperol
  • 1 ounce soda (soda water, or sparkling water)
  • Orange wheel (for garnish, I used a blood orange)

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • Fill a wine glass with ice and add the Prosecco, Aperol, and soda. Stir gently to combine and garnish with an orange wheel.

Notes

  1. Perfect Proportions: Always remember the classic Aperol Spritz ratio: 3:2:1 – that’s three parts prosecco, two parts Aperol, and one part soda water to get the balance just right.
  2. Quality Ingredients: Opt for a high-quality Prosecco and use fresh soda water. The ingredients are few, so their quality will significantly impact the drink.
  3. Serving Glass: Consider using a large wine glass or a goblet to serve Aperol Spritz. It provides plenty of room for ice and an orange slice, both of which are essential for an authentic experience.
  4. Ice is Essential: Fill your glass with ice cubes to keep your spritz delightfully chilled and to slow dilution. More ice actually helps the drink stay colder longer and thus, prevents it from getting watered down quickly.
  5. Garnish Gracefully: Don’t skimp on the orange slice garnish, it’s not just aesthetic but it adds a fresh citrus note to your drink. Sometimes a green olive is also added for an extra layer of flavor.
  6. Gentle Stir: Give your spritz a gentle stir after pouring all the ingredients to ensure they meld together without disrupting the fizz too much.
