Sloppy Joe Dip

You don’t have to wait for game day to enjoy this dip, even though it’s the ideal appetizer for such an occasion. Trust me, you won’t need an excuse to make this incredible, hot and cheesy dip. One bite and you’ll fall in love.

This dip is so cheesy and delicious, it’s perfect with some toasted baguette slices, tortilla chips, bagel chips or even between buns, just like the regular Sloppy Joes we all know and love.

If you love Sloppy Joes, you’ll love this appetizer version. It has all the great flavors you’d expect except it’s in a dip form. The biggest difference is the addition of lots of ooey gooey cheese, using both cheddar and Velveeta. This makes for an ideal appy on game day, because it’s loaded up with protein, and filling. If anyone goes home hungry, it’s their own fault, or make a double batch for an extra large gathering.

Sloppy Joe Dip Highlights

  • Delicious. Oozing with smooth melty cheese alone makes it a huge hit.
  • Crowd Pleaser. Bring this to any tailgate party, BBQ, or large gathering to satisfy a lot of happy and hungry mouths.
  • Make Ahead. Easily make this dip a day ahead and reheat in the oven when ready to use.

Ingredients You’ll Need

overhead shot of ingredients needed to make sloppy joe dip.
  • Beef – I prefer using extra lean ground beef to avoid draining the excess fat.
  • Onion – White or yellow onions are great for this dip.
  • Bell Pepper – I used a medium sized green pepper and diced it. Any color will do though.
  • Garlic – Some garlic for lots of great flavor, use as much or as little as you like.
  • Flour – You’ll need all-purpose white flour to thicken our dip a bit.
  • Ketchup – Lots of ketchup for that sloppy joe taste.
  • Brown Sugar – You’ll need some brown sugar for a touch of sweetness.
  • Mustard – I added some plain yellow mustard. You can substitute with Dijon if that’s what you have.
  • Worcestershire – Worcestershire sauce adds that tangy, savory, sweet, and salty taste.
  • Broth – Use some low sodium beef broth. You can substitute it with vegetable of chicken broth.
  • Cheese – I think cheese is the secret ingredient in this dip and I’ve chosen both shredded cheddar cheese and Velveeta. Now I hardly ever use Velveeta, but sometimes you just have to because it makes the dip silky and smooth.

How To Make Sloppy Joe Dip

detailed process shots showing how to make sloppy joe dip.
  1. Cook the beef. Add the ground beef to an oven safe skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring often and breaking the beef apart as you go, until the beef is no longer pink.
  2. Add onion and pepper. To the same skillet add the onion and bell pepper. Stir occasionally and cook until the onion is softened and translucent, 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until aromatic.
  4. Cook and thicken beef mixture. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and cook while stirring, for another minute. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and beef broth to the skillet and stir well. Turn the heat down to medium heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thick, about 20 minutes.
  5. Stir in some cheese. Stir in the Velveeta and 1 cup of the cheddar cheese and cook until the cheese melts.
  6. Finish and broil. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the meat mixture. Place the skillet under the broiler for about 5 minutes until the cheese melts and browns. The dip should be hot and bubbly.
  7. Garnish and serve. Garnish with some chopped parsley and serve immediately.

Can I Make Sloppy Joe Dip In Advance

Absolutely! Simply make everything up to and including step 5, let it come to room temperature, cover the skillet with a lid or foil then refrigerate overnight until ready to broil it.

What Can I Add To Make It Spicier

If you like your dip with a little zip, feel free to add some red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or chili flakes to taste.

Can I Make This In A Slow Cooker/Crockpot

Absolutely! Simply cook the ground beef, onion, bell pepper and garlic as instructed in a skillet, then transfer the meat mixture and the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker and stir. Cook on low for 2 hours, give it another good stir and serve.

Can I Use A Different Kind Of Meat

For sure! If you prefer go ahead and use ground chicken, turkey or pork.

Expert Tips

  1. Use ground turkey instead of ground beef for a leaner option.
  2. Make a batch of original sloppy joes and save half of the meat. Add cheese to one half and serve as a dip. You get two dishes with the effort of one.
  3. Toast baguette slices to serve with the dip.
  4. You can substitute the beef broth for chicken broth if that’s all you have on hand.

Leftovers

Store leftover sloppy joe dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Bake in the oven to reheat or microwave.

Freezer

Once cooled in the fridge, you can store this dip in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Remove from the freezer and place in the refrigerator until thawed. Bake in the oven to reheat or microwave.
