I’m really learning these days how pointless it is to spend extra money on spice blends from the grocery store! They’re usually made with such simple pantry staples, you likely have everything you need already to go. No need to take an extra trip!

While typically made with pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder, there are a lot of great ways you can jazz up your own seasoned salt. Give this recipe a try and then have some fun with it! Add extra flavors, amp up the ingredients you like best and add more. This maybe a one-size-fits-all recipe, so take these basics and run with them to create your own version.

What is seasoned salt?

Most of us have a big container of seasoning salt from the store hanging out in our pantry. What is it exactly? It’s quite simple, the name gives as much description as you need. It’s truly just seasoned salt. With spices, herbs, and other varieties of flavorings, this is a simple way to have an all-in-one way to add some flavor when you’re seasoning food.

Ingredients

  • Kosher salt – You can use more or less depending on how potent you’d like the flavors to be.
  • Paprika – Regular, smoked, or sweet.
  • Black pepper – Freshly cracked.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder – Use more or less of these if preferred.
  • Chili powder – Homemade or any store-bought type you like best.

How to make seasoning salt

  1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl. Transfer to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry, place.

Voila! Just like that, you have your own customizable seasoning salt. It’s so much better knowing exactly what’s going into your food!

What can I use seasoning salt on?

You can use your new blend anywhere you’d usually use salt and pepper. It adds a great depth of flavor to any savory dish! You can sprinkle over french fries or potato wedges, use it to make some easy baked chicken, fish, steak; you name it.

Here are some of my favorite recipes using seasoned salt:

  • One Pot Chicken and Orzo
  • One Pot Chicken Drumsticks with Beluga Lentils
  • Cheddar Beef Skillet Pull Apart Bread
  • Salisbury Steak Meatballs

How to store

Transfer the seasoned salt to an airtight container or jar. If you’ve recently washed the container you’re storing the blend in, make sure it is completely dry. If there is any moisture let, you risk having mold spoil the seasoned salt. Let the container sit upside down on a drying rack for at least 20-30 minutes before adding the seasoned salt.

Your blend will last 3-4 years stored in a cool, dark, dry place like your pantry or a spice drawer. I suggest writing the date you mixed the spiced on the jar so you can keep better track of it as your spice collection grows. Your spice blend will never go “bad” or rotten, it’ll simply just lose its flavor over time.
