Fajita Seasoning

This spice blend is an absolute staple in any pantry, even if you don’t cook Mexican dishes very often. It’s just so full of complex flavor, like sweet paprika, smokey cumin, and hot cayenne. I know you’ll be sprinkling it into any dishes you can think of from now on!

The great thing about making your homemade spice blends is that you can control what goes into them. While I used coarse salt in this recipe, you could actually substitute it with a low-sodium table salt and that would drastically reduce the sodium content. The main ingredient in this spice blend is chili powder so look for some that’s high quality and fresh.

What Are Fajitas?

A fajita is traditionally just a Mexican dish that is made up of any grilled meat that’s served in either a flour or corn tortilla. The thing that really makes fajitas special are the spices used in it. You know when you’re at a restaurant and a sizzling, exciting plate is walked by your table, prompting everyone to ask: ‘what is that?’. Well it’s a fajita!

Let’s whip this little seasoning up, it’ll be guaranteed to turn heads no matter what you add it to!

a bowl with salt, pepper, paprika, cumin, chili powder, and cayenne pepper.

Ingredients In Fajita Seasoning

  • Spices – Chili powder, ground cumin, paprika – smoked or regular, and cayenne pepper.
  • Seasoning – Salt and pepper.

That’s it! I told you it was easy, didn’t I? These spices are all super common in the spice section of any grocery store, so stock up next time you’re out.

How To Make Fajita Seasoning

Detailed measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  • Combine your Fajita spice blend: Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Recipe will yield about 2 1/2 tbsp. Store in a spice jar in your spice cabinet.

What Can I Add Fajita Seasoning To?

This fajita seasoning is perfect for all kinds of dishes, not only fajitas but I mean if that’s the first recipe you want to take for a spin after whipping this up, I wouldn’t blame you.

  • Easy Chicken Fajitas
  • Pork Fajitas
  • Fajita Potato Bites
  • Mexican Street Corn Salad
  • Quesadillas like my Grilled Veggie Quesadilla
  • Carne Asada Tacos
  • Chicken Burritos

How To Tell If Your Spices Are Still Fresh

We all know spice blends can last a while, but they do go stale eventually. If you want to ensure both the spices you add to your seasoning and your seasoning itself is fresh just keep an eye on the color. If the pigment starts to fade and the spices begin to look dull, your blend may be starting to go stale.

Storing Fajita Seasoning

Stored in an airtight container this spice blend will keep in your pantry for 3 – 4 years! So whip some up today, future you will be thankful.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin (ground)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika ((I used smoked))
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Recipe will yield about 2 ½ tbsp. Store in a spice jar in your spice cabinet.

Notes

  1. Keep spices and herbs away from heat and moisture. Although spices and herbs will keep for a long time if stored properly (4 years), they will lose their strength.
  2. To tell if your spices are still fresh, just look at their color and if the color has faded, their flavor probably has faded as well.
  3. Nutritional information is for ¼ tsp of fajita seasoning.
